Have you ever heard of Sailors Valentines?

Back in the 1800s when sailors came to port, they purchased intricate artworks composed of tiny shells glued to cotton batting in unique, geometric patterns.  Sailors would be at sea for months or even years at a time, and these Valentines made the perfect romantic gift to give to a loved one when they safely returned home.

Most commonly, sailors Valentine’s were made in the Barbados by women who were experts at shell craft.  My shell trays are inspired by those beautiful antique works of art, and they are functional serve ware as well. 

This Geometric Shell Tray contains gorgeous patterns in soft, neutral tones.  There is a mushroom coral in the center and the pattern radiates outward using sliced shells, limpets, and scallops.  The shells are encased in crystal clear epoxy resin.  The wooden tray has gold-toned metal handles with a minimalist design. 

NOTICE:  This tray is offered at a wholesale price due to a flaw. Please see pictures.  I used a silicone sealant in the corners of the tray which separated slightly from the wood once the resin was poured.  The tray is still very beautiful and this flaw does not interfere with it's functionality.
